Commerce City has 840 acres of parks and open space throughout the community that include amenities from shelters, barbecue pits, volleyball and basketball courts and links to local trails. The city has over 25 miles of trails, some that link to the larger regional trail systems like the Sand Creek Regional Greenway.

Second Creek Open Space Restoration

The Commerce City Parks Maintenance Division will begin work in spring 2019 on a project to restore the prairie in the Second Creek Open Space area, located south of E. 104th Ave. and north of E. 96thAve., between Fonterra and Buckley Ranch. The Open Space Restoration will last several years and take place in different phases. Depending on the phase, some areas off trail will be closed to foot traffic.

Regional Trails

Explore the Sand Creek Regional Greenway or the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge on bike or foot. Barr Lake State Park offers premier bird watching, fishing and hiking opportunities a short drive from the city's core.

Parks & Trail Rules

Please be courteous and respectful of one another along the trails and in parks by following these rules.

Keep It Clean

  • All trash and debris must be placed in proper containers or removed off site.

Pets & Horses

  • Pets must be on leash.
  • Dogs may be off leash at the First Creek Dog Park and Willow Bark Dog Park (Denver) but must remain within the fenced boundaries of the parks. 
  • Horses may be ridden on Sand Creek Trail, the Second Creek Trail and the Arsenal Perimeter Trail.
  • Horses should not be ridden on other city paved trails and paths. Pet owners must remove all pet droppings.

Trail Use

  • Respect the rights of other trail users regardless of their speed, level of skill, or method of travel.
  • Obey all normal auto traffic rules and regulations when using city streets or bike paths. Be alert for all street signs and trail markers.
  • Stay on the right side of trails, except when passing.
  • Use only half of the trail whether you are solo or in a group.
  • Keep speed low when approaching other trail users.
  • Motor vehicle access is not allowed, except in designated areas.

Respect Your Parks

  • Motor vehicle access is not allowed, except in designated areas.
  • Fires are allowed only in grills provided by the Parks, Recreation & Golf Department.
  • An alcohol permit must be obtained to consume alcohol in most parks.
